Flash on the Beach

by Wayne

Last week Wayne and Joost ventured down south to sunny Brighton for Flash on the Beach, this we might add is not a sordid event but a  4 day conference on interactive design, with talks given by the best names in the industry such as Colin moock, Hillman Curtis, Joshua Davis, Andy Polaine, Joshua Hirsch and Joel Baumann to name only a select few.

The event not only covered the usual discussions on running a creative agency, but  ideas on the advances in flash, whilst revealing some really inspirational ideas and work, for example Colin Moocks megaphone, which allows phone call controlled games for big screens with multiple users and Joshua Hirsch’s play with fidgets (simple motors/machines) that pulled there emotions from twitter- all of which we can tap into for free!

There were some great speakers and some exceptionally talented individuals, like Joa Ebert who was asked to make an impromptu 10 minute talk to inspire us, his reponce was to hand code an interactive 3d cube responsive to sound and moved in real time within 3d space… all in 9minutes 40 seconds (I would just add that even the speakers were speechless)

Fortunately for us we also found the private party haunt for all the speakers and managed to gate crash that which kept each evening eventful. On a professional observation, I was slightly alarmed that of the 1100 delegates there were probably a maximum of 20 females, I hope this is not  a reflection on the industry.
